Crossexamined by Mr Slade:- The people who ran past my shop
were running away from the brothel. I went to look. Before
that I had been inside my shop. They had got clear past my
shop before I ran out. After it was over I went back to my
shop No 56. It was about 7.30 p.m. quite dark. There are
street lamps in my street, one at each end. I have my own Chinese paper lantern. I saw one man only lying on the ground.
By the Court:- There was a light at the door of the brothel.
There is a vacant house between me and the brothel.
Lai Shu declared:- I live at 100 Temple Street Yaumati. In
the evening of 3rd August last I was passing the brothel and Lound a crowd outside the brothel. I saw a girl and the police sergeant (prisoner) in the brothel. They were playing and went from the sitting room to the passage leading to the cookhouse. The police Sergeant came out and saw a number of men there and picked up a piece of wood as if he were going to throw it at them. The woman took away the wood. People ran
out into the street from the doorway. I did too. One of the crowd, an old man, remained there, and the Sergeant kicked him behind (points out the place) The man fell down. 'In a short time he got up. When he got up the police sergeant walked away. I saw the old man distinctly. He was not known to me personally. On 9th August I went to the Hospital and
was shown a dead body. It was that of the old man.
Crossexamined by Mr Slade:-
I was formerly in the Police Force (C No 296) from August 99 to August 1901. 2 years. During a portion of that time I was stationed at Tai O and the defendant was also stationed there. I was reported three several times, one for neglect of duty and fined $1. Then absent from station (3 days in barracks) and for being asleep on duty (50 cents fine) My wages at that time were $10.60.
